How to Film your Screen and Yourself at the Same Time

course creation

If you’re creating video content for your first online course, or for your YouTube channel or marketing materials, but wondering how do you record your screen AND yourself at the same time?

In this video, you’ll learn the 2 simplest and easiest ways to do it.

Method #1 For Filming Your Screen and Yourself at the Same Time - CAMTASIA (PAID)

First, if you’re creating your online course you might already be using a program called Camtasia.

I personally use Camtasia to not only record all of my screen recorded videos for inside my course, but to completely edit and beautify all of the videos for my online courses and marketing.

It’s a super easy to use program and it will help you create stunning videos for your courses as well.

Here's the step-by-step process to follow:

Go ahead and open up Camtasia and select > Record Screen.

In the Camtasia Recorder, toggle the Webcam to ON. Be sure to select the correct webcam if you have an external one like mine.

Select which mic to record from, and choose whether you want to record the full screen or a custom-sized area.

Hit Record and record your video.

Once you’re done, click Save & Edit and you’ll bring the video files into the main Camtasia Editor.

Here you can see your screen and webcam video have been added separately. Feel free to resize and position your webcam feed to where it's out of the way from whatever you're showing on your screen.

You can even hide it for certain segments of your video, and have it reappear later.

Once you’re happy with it, click Produce & Share from the top menu to create a video ready to upload to the web.

I like to use Camtasia for this since I’m already using it to edit all of my videos – it makes the whole process super simple.

But Camtasia is a paid tool – so if Camtasia isn’t your jam or if you’d rather start with a free option, head on over to Loom.

Method #2 For Filming Your Screen and Yourself at the Same Time - LOOM (FREE)

Loom is a FREE video and screen recording software you can use to film your screen and yourself at the same time!

Head to loom.com and click 'Get Loom For Free' to sign up for a free account!

You’ll install a browser plugin into Chrome.

Click the Loom logo to access the menu on any page you want to record.

Under Record, select Screen + Cam to record both at the same time.

Make sure you have the page or slide deck you want to record open and ready to go!

You can select to record your whole screen or just the tab you have open.

You can also adjust the placement and size of your talking head recording (now and as you record), so you can move it out of the way if you need to.

Once you’re done, hit DONE!

Loom will host your video and give you a link to share it, but you can also download it so you can upload it to your course hosting platform.

There are very basic editing features with Loom that will allow you to trim your videos, but if you want to get fancy you’ll need an external video editing software like Camtasia or iMovie.
